the bare WFH essentials

Remember that space you unexpectedly had to make appear last year? Yup, talking about that desk, closet, or corner you quickly transformed to meet your new work/school-from-home reality.

Having a dedicated workspace can make all the difference in your productivity and focus. Same goes for kids. Their curious brains will be steering our future, so it’s important to make time and space to set everyone up well.

Repurposed entry console table, floor lamp, and task chair into a home school space.
A repurposed floor lamp, entry console, and retired chair became my girl's home learning space.

Because home dynamics look different for us all, here are my bare essentials to help make your work and/or school-from-home situation more comfortable and doable wherever you’re at.

task lighting

Take it from someone who’s had a lot of eye issues (dryness, myopia, retinal tears), proper task lighting is essential for your workspace. It helps reduce eye strain, mental fatigue, and of course, makes what you’re looking at way easier to see!

Natural light is wonderful, but it’s really an ambient source. Task lighting doesn’t have to cost big dollar bucks, and if you want to splurge, your eyes are more than worth it.

task chair

I’m all for using what you already own, but if you invest in one thing, let it be your chair. It supports your neck and spine, and if work is computer-heavy, your body needs full support.

If you choose to invest and are able to easily return options, try out a few different models. Back in my healthcare design days, we would sit-test dozens of chairs with our clients. Like a car, chairs feel different to everyone. How you fit and feel in the driver’s seat is the bottom line (literally!). My daughter tried out the swivel chair above but found an armless stationary dining chair to be a better sit.

task tray

Whether you have a dedicated home office or set up shop on the dining table between meals, having a vessel to contain work-related items leaves surfaces tidy and reduces the misplacement of vital info. It also helps transition your mind from work to play, which can be challenging when everything is happening under one roof.

Search your home for an adequate-sized box, basket, or bin to house what you need. Or treat yourself to a tray that complements your existing decor!

Working from home and homeschooling aren’t new, but they’ve become much more normal for many.
