self-care starts with your interior space

For the past two weeks, I’ve been in overhaul mode. Not with my interior space (though for me that would be SO fun) but with my website. A significant copy refresh to deliver this clear, consistent message: caring for your home is caring for yourself.

I know this to be true because after I help a client organize their bathroom, they exhale the breath they were holding. When my client shares their pantry pain points and I reflect back on what I heard in the form of a solution, their eyes light up and say, “Yesss, I would love that!”. When I check in with clients, they still love what we did AND are so excited to tell me about the next space they’ve improved on their own. Or my personal fave, when I bump into a client in town and hear what a difference the few purposeful changes we discussed have made to the way they see their space…I know this statement speaks volumes of truth.

I also know this to be true because I’m personally benefitting from the thought and care I’ve given my interior space.

The ugly part of owning a house is the inevitable (read: expensive) maintenance. First, the furnace, air conditioner, and water softener. Then two new sump pumps. The hot water heater, refrigerator, and range followed, and this year…it’s the roof. All of this in four years. These are major investments with no wait for “someday”. I definitely took the roof the hardest but I also surprised myself with how quickly I bounced back. Maintenance is part of owning a house and doing it ensures I have a home. A place to live, enjoy, and love. Even if it means the shoestring budget gets a wee bit (er, so much) tighter.

Since moving in six years ago, I’ve paid attention to what’s worked and how we work in every space. I’ve set up and reset closets. Arranged and rearranged furniture. Turned a nursery into an office, then a guest suite, and now my daughter’s bedroom. Our kitchen cabinets and drawers have been tweaked half a dozen times to find what’s intuitive. And every bit of style and decor comes from a place of purpose, both meaningful and practical, to each of us. This intentionality and mindfulness have given us a home we love to be in every day in every way. We find calm and comfort in our surroundings, and a reliable sturdiness to carry us through the mundane, the fun, and the expensive unexpected. We’ve taken care of us by taking care of where we live.

A glimpse at some of the interior spaces we've put thought and care into, always prioritizing function and letting our personal style unfold over time. It's enabled us to move through everyday life a little easier and happier, and grants us space and peace of mind when life throws us a plot twist.

I know every house and life is different, but I also know that everything I’ve made happen is possible and doable for other houses and lives, too. Organizing and design are learned skills, and everything you need to do it is in and around you right now. When you show your space some love and attention, it will love and tend to you right back...you'll be so glad you did.

what room, if given care and intention, would serve and make you feel good?
