3 savvy shelf styling tips

Late last summer, I wrote about how the secret to styling any space is simply starting. Another styling secret I want to share is how to do it in a way that’s savvy and affordable.

These built-ins have been styled a dozen times (or more), each time getting closer to what feels and looks right to me.
It's a process!

functional decor

Rather than buying decorative pieces to serve a purely aesthetic role, look around your home for items that can both serve their intended purpose and be displayed when not in use.

The glass pitcher (top shelf) and tiered serving stand (bottom shelf) are awkward pieces to store in our kitchen. They made great additions to our built-ins and seeing them regularly prompts me to reach for them

when needed (instead of forgetting they exist!).

Same goes for the tablecloth or placemats (middle shelf). I rolled them up, secured the rolls with matching ribbon, and filled an empty space on the shelf.

upcycle your glass

I love upcycling glass jars. They can become a vase for flowers or herbs, a holder for markers and pens, or a storage container for food like overnight oats. Spirit bottles are another glass vessel I like to repurpose.

Around our home, I have them holding faux stems, acting as a bookend (middle shelf), or paired with similar elements for a clean, timeless look. Free decor that also supports the earth? Win-win all around.

conceal the chaos

Does anybody else despise cords? They‘re long, messy, and unfortunately, necessary for keeping our devices working. And if you rent or move into a home previously owned (like ours), you don’t have much say as to where outlets are situated.

For example, in the built-in left of the fireplace, we have an outlet smack in the middle. I've tried a few different objects, including stacks of books and a photo album, but the pair of stone canisters you see below with a little faux greenery conceal the outlet best.

Similarly, our internet router needs to be housed in the built-in to the fireplace's right. Here I used a framed photo similar in shape but slightly larger than the router to hide it along with a ceramic vase (actually a repurposed soap dispenser!) and decorative word art to create a stylish grouping.

With a little trial-and-error and a closer look at seemingly single-purpose objects around your home, you can reimagine almost anything functional into a beautiful form, too.

what savvy tricks do you have for styling your space?

I'd love to read about what you've tried and what’s working for you in the Comments, and I hope you make time to take time for YOU.
