our DIY "space" home party

Autumn is a busy time in our home. Amongst the celebrated holidays, we have three birthdays, mine and our two girls, to enjoy. Since my first daughter turned one, I have loved making their day an extra special event. They have fun choosing a theme and the whole endeavor becomes a creative DIY project for me.

For my daughter’s party last weekend, we immersed ourselves in the solar system. We colored and hung paper planets, made moon rocks (foil-covered plastic eggs) to hunt for “Pin-the-Planet”, created edible constellations, and turned candy melts into galaxy bark.

My personal mission was to replicate my girl’s favorite planet, Saturn, into a cake. It took some trial and error to shape melted white chocolate into rings but by the third try it came together (#goodenough). Baking and freezing the cake portion a couple of weeks ago was a huge time saver, so if you’re making any kind of 3D cake I highly recommend this.

Because my girl is allergic to eggs, I made this vegan sponge cake. It’s delicate and delicious right out of the oven, so having it partially frozen also made it sturdier for frosting and assembling.

For her real birthday, we celebrated with friends who feel like family and kept to the space theme with a "Libra" inspired cake. It was totally a night before idea but with my friend's help (and lots of sprinkles!) we pulled it off.

My little moon baby loved her space party and told me the cakes were her favorite part!

what crafty DIY projects do you love to do?

Handmade cards have been mine since I was a kid. Making them now with my girls is even more special. Can’t wait to learn what creative projects you love to do. My next mama DIY is for Halloween, and my mission to make another no-sew duo costume continues!

Always,
