need a room refresh? try a quick furniture flip

When it comes to shopping, anyone who knows me would say I’m pretty frugal. I’ll price compare or hold out for a deal, which has often meant missing out on a good find. I don’t get down about it, though. If I’m not okay with spending, I’d rather not. Buyer’s remorse is hard for me. I’ve become a mindful shopper. If I’m going to invest in something, it has to have a clear purpose and space in my home.

Which brings me to the point of this post. So often when we’re looking to refresh a space, we feel this nudge to buy. Sometimes a new thing is needed to fill a functional role you can’t meet with what you currently own. But before adding anything to your cart, photograph your space and analyze what you see. Is all the furniture in the room being used? If so, can you think of arranging them in a different way? If not, could a piece be used somewhere else or repurposed for a new use? Chances are, you're staring at many possibilities. Read on and see if one of these flips could be the simple fix you need to update a room or two in your home.

layout flip

Sectional first faced into the open kitchen (left), then towards the fireplace (right).

Both kept a clear path of travel between adjacent rooms.

Reconfiguring furniture is the simplest way to freshen up a room. And it’s free! Our family room has gone through a couple of layout changes, but this third try is the one we’re in love with.

I hesitated to do it for some time thinking the sectional would cut off our open path (from kitchen to family room to office). It did change the path but its new location has created a definition around the room. It feels more like a gathering space instead of a pass-through and we’re loving it.

To complete the refresh, I’ve designed a gallery wall around the TV, which my daughter is super excited about! It’s going to bring a personal touch to the room that draws you in while helping hide the TV itself.

Then and now. Same stand, newer toys.

Our TV stand was bought seven years ago to hold our first (and current) flat screen. The storage portion was quickly taken over by board books and toddler toys then more books and puzzles. Now it’s mostly home to LEGO creations and bricks, which regularly spill over into the path of travel becoming a foot hazard (ouch!) and/or food for the vacuum. We’ve gradually shed kid stuff from our family space and this stand is the last piece.

It’s time.

We definitely still need the storage, so once our new stand is assembled (replacement pieces were needed and have taken a month to get here) I’m going to flip this one and relocate it to our play space.

My inspo comes from my favorite DIYer @angelarosehome who refreshed an IKEA dresser with chalk paint and modified legs. I’ll be doing a similar update and sharing the results once it's done.

have you done a furniture flip lately?

I flipped my bedroom around a couple of times a year growing up or simply moved around the items in my space for a new perspective. Tell me what space or piece of furniture you’ve flipped in the Comments, and be sure to make time to take time for you.
