it’s in the bag: containing clutter on the go

There’s an incredible bonus that comes with organizing your home. Once you start and get a practice going, you’ll see it ripple into areas beyond your interior space and you’ll want to find ways to get organized in other parts of your life, too.

A great example is the bag of choice you use when you’re out and about. Whether it’s a purse, backpack, diaper, or shoulder bag, you’ve probably found yourself turning it upside down to find that one thing you know is in there but can’t possibly find when you need it. My friend, Sarah, fresh off of her home organizing wins, was rummaging through her handbag when she thought of me and said, “I’m wondering if you should design a pouch for your purse that has like…multiple pockets to fit different things….” She’s not alone in her thinking because what she proposed does exist!

Purse organizers are portable inserts with various-sized pockets to divide and contain what’s in your bag. Ideally, they make swapping purses seamless because you just pop the insert out of one and into another. The catch, though, is having similar-sized bags to swap between, otherwise, you’d end up buying different-sized inserts for EVERY purse you own, defeating the purpose of this organizing solution.

If you want to avoid that consumer trap but, like Sarah, are seeking a similar solution, try out this bag-in-a-bag trick. I use my work bag as an example, but this is practical for any bag designed to carry more than your wallet and phone...

...and you can try it out with resealable or zip-top plastic bags first.

Once you see the positive results, you can invest in something more substantial for long-term success. Here are the reusable stand-up style bags I've been using since 2020! They also come in other storage sizes, ideal for containing different sizes and types of things.

what's your go-to reusable bag?
