interior design vs. getting organized: which does your home need more?

Hi Friends! Let’s dive into 2023 with a mindful question about where you and your home are headed first this year:

Do you want to design your interior space OR do you need to get organized?

Said another way, "What do you need most from your interior space?" Remember to keep your budget and personal bandwidth in mind, and know I'm here if you want pro guidance and accountability. If you’re stumped, ask yourself the following questions to get clarity on which way you and your home need to go:

interior design / create a big-picture vision

Has your home stayed as-is for a while and are you ready to make it feel like your own?

Does the layout of your home serve your lifestyle?

Do you need new furniture, fixtures, lighting, or other functional accessories?

Do you want to make aesthetic changes?

Do you know what you want your space to look like, feel like, and be like?

get organized / focus on function, systems, details

Do the things you own, use, and love all have a place that serves you well?

Do you have systems that make everyday tasks simple, effortless, and sustainable long-term?

Is clutter disrupting your thoughts and draining your energy?

Do you regularly let go of anything not serving you, and if not, do you want to?

If your answers make the debate clear, then you know which path to move forward on. If you’re torn between which to prioritize, you’re not alone. It’s natural to want and need a bit of both simultaneously, and you’ll likely find yourself dancing between design and organizing because they are so intertwined. You need that big-picture vision to know what you’re working towards, but it’s important to have the key parts pared down so you only work with what’s essential to your space.

The good news is you don’t have to formally choose between interior design or organizing to get going. Both are part of your home journey and will build upon each other in positive, life-changing ways. What you need most will present itself organically, either right in front of you or by interrupting your thoughts. Notice how you feel in different rooms (calm vs. tense) or in doing different tasks (is it seamless or a struggle?). A negative emotional response may be the sign you’re looking for. I personally reached a breaking point with my home office. Between reshuffling rooms, family visits, and the holidays, every surface and corner had been taken over by the randomness of things (read: stuff I said I’d get to 'later'). Well, later is now, and while I have plans to refresh the paint, rug, lighting, and art, re-establishing order was my first and absolute must.

If an obvious choice doesn’t become apparent or you feel stuck, book a free call with me! We’ll chat for 20 minutes about you and what makes you unhappy with your home. Together we’ll find out if design, organizing, or both is what you need.

Did I mention, it’s FREE?

Okay, fun, fantasy question time…if you could, right now,

would you rather be an interior designer or a pro organizer?

While interior design is often associated with style and decor, it’s the problem-solving puzzle of each space (much like organizing) that drew me to this field. And since I’ve been an obsessed organizer my whole life, it only made sense to merge my favourite skills into a purpose that is INTERIOR+DESIGN — your sounding board and guide for finding your home’s sweet spot between comfort and functionality, and simply feeling good in and about your space.

I'd love to know what attracts you to either field, so tell me all about it in the Comments below.

Getting to know you is another part of the puzzle I love, so if you want to share something offline, subscribe to my personal note here and hit reply once you hear from me.
