how to start a multi-room refresh (DIY and vlog!)

Happy first Sunday of September! Today, I'm coming to you with something new for the blog — a video! We've started a multi-room project in our house, so I thought it would be a fun change to share this experience with you vlog-style.

The project starts with my 7-year-old's original bedroom, which for many reasons (i.e. the limitation of our HVAC to properly heat/cool the room, the odd built-in meant for an old-school box TV, and too much storage and surfaces for her to maintain) isn't working for her or us anymore. And that's okay and actually totally exciting to re-envision and repurpose a few spaces in our home.

Original bedroom window seat, built-in, and walk-in closet.

Part one of this multi-room reshuffle is to move my daughter out and into our current guest room, which has proper air circulation, is an ideal size for a full bed and desk, and without built-ins has tons of potential to be a beautiful, cozy space. It's also very vacant. A dedicated guest suite sounds ideal, but raise your hand if yours also only gets used for two weeks out of the 52 weeks a year (at most). This reshuffle is going to make better use of our spaces for what we need them to be for the bulk of the year, and when we are blessed to have family visits, we've got a who-sleeps-where arrangement already planned!

Below is the intro vlog, followed by some progress photos and video updates:

intro vlog to room reshuffle project

step 1: move out

step 2: prep + paint dated built-ins

Step 2 started with deglossing the built-ins to roughen them up (aka liquid sanding). This helps the wood bind to the primer, which in turn binds to the paint (two coats each). The original wood really stood out in the white room and had a noticeable pink undertone. To lessen the contrast, I chose to match the built-ins to the walls...

...so they would seamlessly blend in!

The takeaway from this post: STAY TUNED! Because multiple rooms are being swapped, this project is going to take more than a weekend (or two). And I need help! This is definitely a family project, and we're using the pockets of time we can between work, school, and personal fun to get it done. I hope you come back to see the progress and learn from this DIY process. I can see the end result in my mind and it's going to be AWESOME.

Stay tuned!

do you have a room you want to makeover into something more purposeful?

I love reimagining the function of a room, and since we moved into our home 5 years ago, we've changed the purpose of many rooms more than once. It's all about making each space work FOR you and your lifestyle today. I'd love to know what room(s) in your home needs a tweak or two to work better for you. Share it in the Comments, and I hope you make time to take time for YOU this long weekend!

Always,
