how to get organized without feeling overwhelmed

If you’ve read some of my previous blog posts or subscribe to my personal notes, you know I’m fascinated by the positive impact organizing has on our mental well-being. Organizing your space is an incredible tool for dealing with inner stress. If your home is in physical chaos, any challenge or to-do becomes harder. All of the things you see are visual reminders of other tasks you need to tend to, which get in the way of the work list already running through your mind. When you create order around you, you grant yourself space to breathe and think clearly. You feel calmer, in control, and confident in taking on that work list without distraction.

Getting organized can feel overwhelming especially if you think you’re not the “organizing type”. I believe everyone can learn the skill of organizing. It’s a practice. And with intention, it can become a healthy habit that you’ll be so grateful you started because calm, in control, and confident are pretty awesome ways to feel about yourself.

Every good practice starts with a small action. Here are two to try:

make your bed

Maybe you’ve already mastered this habit but have you thought about how you feel afterwards? Tidy? Put together? Accomplished? Making your bed first thing gives you momentum to keep the rest of your space tidy. Moreover, it instills a sense of self-worth, satisfaction, and confidence… “If I can do this small thing, I can do another and another.” Such an empowering daily reminder and tidy note for everyone in your home (littles, too!) to start on.

make a tiny tweak

“Getting organized” can bring up negative feelings (anxiety, discomfort, guilt, pressure, overwhelm), so let’s scale that idea way back. Put scattered objects on your desk in neat piles. Glance around your living room and return anything that doesn’t belong. Scan those spaces again. Did your shoulders drop? Did you let out a satisfied exhale? No matter how ordinary or mundane the action, one tiny tweak positively shifts your mindset.

When I lack confidence, a tiny tweak is a tactical boost. As a mama and a small business owner, I regularly oscillate between feeling behind, questioning my abilities, and worrying that what I believe to be my purpose is not actually valuable to anyone else. Do you ever (or often) feel this, too? It’s normal and hard yet with practice, again and again, my space is here for me. When I edit a drawer or tidy a corner of a room, I’m hit with the same good feeling my clients experience after I help them resolve a pain point in their space. It's tactical therapy and an empowering reminder that organizing IS effective and an invaluable skill we can all practice to reduce stress and invite more space for calm, contentment, and joy.

Having a well-organized space gives you something to lean into when life feels hard...to help lift you back up and get you through.

I'm not signing off with my usual question here. Instead, I have a favor to ask: After you try one or both of these small actions for a solid week, let me know how the change has made you feel.
