kid bedroom design / part 2 “from guest to girl (and back)”

I’m so grateful my three-year-old is such a go-with-the-flow being. She transitioned from nursery to big girl room pretty seamlessly last year, and despite taking some time to finish her space, she hasn’t ever asked, “When will it be done?”.

Her room was always intended to be hers but originally served as a guest suite for family visits. Well, with no guests last year and my husband needing a closed home office, my then two-year-old was upgraded to her real room sooner than planned.

Here's a look at the journey!

The move itself happened quickly because (a) it had to, and (b) we (thankfully) had all the major pieces. Her dresser and nightstand joined the queen guest bed, and we said goodbye to the crib and glider. Giving her the bed was the most practical solution as it had nowhere else to live in our house! Plus, the cost/effort savings from not having to find a smaller bed? Bonus.

Functionally, she was set and she adjusted to her new space well. The finishing touches came together a while later...slowly but surely.

starstruck

My inspiration for her nursery came from a mint green and silver metallic blanket by Aden+Anais. The dreamy abstract pattern reminded me of a starry night, and after a miscarriage, my little growing wonder felt like a special light to come.

She truly is. And she loves stars!

After settling into her room, I made bedding my focus. A timeless white duvet (long-term use for my girl, also great for guests) with a fun sheet set underneath was my goal. I really had to exert some patience with the latter. Star patterns were surprisingly hard to find, especially in a good quality textile. Eventually, I stumbled on these clustered star sheets from Pottery Barn Teen, and they were worth the search. Crisp and cool, with a soft hand. Even daddy can’t resist passing out when he’s on her bedtime!

The color combo in the sheets was my jumping-off point for bringing the wall decor together. I painted a moon/star trio to complement the original “my little star…” canvas I made before she was born. As a mock headboard (like in the guest room) it wasn't quite right. When I came across these silver starburst decals and then repositioned the bed, the dream in my head started coming to life.

Putting up the decals was so fun...once I finally did it. I had to get out of my own way and forget about getting it right on right away (hello, they're "removable" stickers for a reason). Once I did, I felt free to PLAY. My girl says it's her favorite part of her room, which makes me melt and smile inside.

girl approved and guest-ready

Staging my last baby's room on Friday left me feeling pure joy. It had been an ongoing process to complete simply because family life and work weren't going to stop for it. I kept writing it on my list and did what I could when I could. The key? I started and kept at it, albeit slowly. And now it's here for my girl wonder to dream, sleep, and play in, with fresh white linens ready to swap out when guests come back over.

what’s your favorite detail in this starlight suite?
