create a kids retreat at home

Ever felt the need to get away in your own home? It’s a common feeling now after months of staring at the same walls. Kids feel it too, and while we adults can reach for tools like meditation or exercise to mentally escape, little ones respond better and faster to physical changes in scenery.

Wanting to lean into my daughter’s need for calm and quiet, my love and I decided to DIY a special book nook space in her room. She has an odd assortment of built-ins and closets, one of which is a small coat-sized closet that she never used or even opened. It only housed a simple wire shelf, which was easily removed and patched.

On a budget, I kept the book nook design and decor simple. The bench top and front plywood trim were stained and painted, respectively, to match her warm gray/cream furniture set as close as possible. A body pillow kept from my pregnancy days fit just right and only needed an inexpensive plush cover to add a super soft touch. Rainbows are her jam, so I incorporated them into a rug, marking the entrance to her nook, and two colorful canvases I painted (with my kids' Crayola paints!). Icicle twinkle lights were the last essential piece that really brought a special touch of whimsy and magic to the space.

My girl was so surprised on her special day and I’m happy to report loves to retreat here daily! We've also removed the door, so it's become a real part of her bedroom experience.

does this inspire you to look in YOUR home for a space, corner, or room you could transform into a retreat?
