curating closets: the linens (plus my secrets to easy folding)

Last post I emphasized the importance of assessing your space (shelf, drawer, closet) first, and then adapting how you store the contents to that space. Work with what you have. This is especially important when storing LINENS. As some of our most commonly used home items (towels, sheets, bedding), linens can really turn a closet into chaos simply by the various types, shapes, sizes, and quantities they come in. Regardless of where your linens live (one drawer was all my first shoebox studio allowed), the space you dedicate to them needs to work with what you’ve got and be maximized for easy regular access.

Fortunately, a good linen tidy-up feels so satisfying afterward. When you pool all your linens together and can sort between use it/love it or let it go, you're left with a much more manageable stack of towels, sheets, etc. to store and maintain. After you've got your keeps, the absolute satisfaction comes from a good FOLD. There's definitely some trial-and-error to it, but once you find a folding technique that works well in your dedicated linen space, the upkeep practically keeps itself. Back in my apartment days, I practiced many different folds for bath towels, kitchen towels, sheets sets, and blankets, until I found the one that worked best for that particular space. Meaning everything essential fit, and was accessible and quick to find.

If you dread folding or haven’t found a way that works consistently, I’ve recorded two “how-to-fold” videos just for you. The first takes you through 3 foolproof ways to keep towels tidy, and the second covers how to bundle bedding sets together so they’re ready to pull out whenever you need them.

Here are 2 bonus videos (why not!). Bonus 1 is how to fold and store smaller towels. Bonus 2 shows how different folds can stack and look in a closet. Enjoy!

are you in a "nesting mode" this November?

November is my favourite month and nothing is more fun for me than puttering around my home, doing a whole top-to-bottom house edit, and redecorating for the holiday season.

I have been loving writing and recording this closet curating series and hope the info and demos are helpful to you. I'd love to know if they are and if you like these types of posts, so please leave a response in the Comments below (don't be shy!). And if you know someone who would also appreciate these tips and tricks, PLEASE send them to the blog!

Until the next post, happy folding and I hope you make time to take time for you.

Always,
